Ask Elizabeth: Congrats on your pregnancy! I’m also pregnant (with my first) and since this is your second, I am wondering what your newborn essentials are after being through it all so recently!
Yes! I love this question and I am so excited to dig through files of folders on my computer to find photos from when Hilde was just a tiny bebe! It is for sure giving me baby fever which is a good thing because baby is coming! We are now onto newborn #2 and after so recently having newborn #1, I feel more prepared for what we need and wanted to share with you the things that we found most valuable! And while you don’t need a Cuddle + Kind, they do look so adorable next to sleeping babies and Hilde LOVES her Avery the Lamb! Okay, let’s get started!
UppaBaby Vista Stroller
This is one of our favorite baby products by far. We have used it countless times on countless adventures. We have taken it on every flight with Hilde, to Disney, strolls through the neighborhood, and kept it in the car for errands. I initially fell in love with it because of the way it looks (duh) but also the way it can convert to a double. I didn’t know it at the time, but having babies 15 months apart, this will come in handy! Not only that, it steers so well (I can do it one handed) and it is easy for this mama to pack up and get out. I cannot wait to share with you the double version once baby comes – it’s going to be so cute!
Halo Bassinest
Hilde didn’t spend very long in the room with us (I think it was about 6-8 weeks) but when she was there, this bassinet was the best! I love how you can adjust it to the height of your bed and then swing it over (and out) to allow you to move freely too. With having a c-section I couldn’t do much at first and having her so close was perfect for those late night (all night) feedings! Read more about why we love it here!
Halo Sleepsack Swaddle
Another Halo product we absolutely adore! We tried a lot of other swaddles and this was just the one that worked best for Hilde girl! Our hospital even gave us one to take home which was amazing because there were many a times we needed to wash one or two, so it was great to have a couple! They are also hip friendly which was so important to us with Hilde’s Hip Dysplasia (if you remember that!)
Nose Frida & Thermometer
When I got this at my baby shower, Bruce said he would literally never use it. Guess what, both of us have used it countless times over the year! It isn’t as gross as it looks/sounds. And it is WAY better at getting those boogers out of babies noses faster and cleaner. It is so sad when they cannot breathe and the Nose Frida helps you help them so much more quickly and efficiently! Also get a thermometer! I recommend just a forehead one because they are easy to use and you can just check them as often as you need to for your mama heart.
LÍLLÉbaby® COMPLETE™ All Seasons Baby Carrier
This carrier has been the best thing ever! So easy to put on alone (which is helpful) and also so comfortable. We wanted something that could fit both me and my 6’3″ husband’s long torso! This was just that. Another big thing that I loved about this is that you can use it right away from the newborn stage!
Onesies
Get yourself a pack of onesies! Or maybe two! Hilde went through so many outfit changes as a baby and it was so much easier just having her in a onesie. Those infant outfits are adorable but not practical for the every day! We had multiple sets of these Burt’s Bees Onesies as she grew!
Puj Tub
This bathtub was the best! I love how it dried and folded and didn’t smell bad. I also was a huge fan of the sink bath life for my back and really just think this is the best infant tub out there. Look at these adorable first bath photos!!
Boppy Nursing Pillow
Add this to your registry! It is perfect for nursing and tummy time and just plain ol’ helpful! I used ours more times than I can count!
Freshly Picked Diaper Bag
For something I use daily, I really don’t have many photos of this bag! I have tried a lot of diaper bags and this by far is my favorite. The fact that it is a backpack is one of the things that makes it so great. I didn’t realize how annoying it would be to try to put a baby in a car seat with a bag falling down your arm. The backpack keeps itself in place while you mom. I also love the pockets inside, the space, and the way it looks! I have had this for over a year and it loos new still! Huge fan.
Diaper Genie
My little sister is pregnant and I told her before her shower that if she didn’t get this, she needed to use gift card money on it (she got it btw!) Babies poop so much and you don’t want to be running to the dumpster (or even garage) with every poopy diaper. And as they get older, the poop only smells worse. I hate when a room smells like diapers and I love that the Diaper Genie keeps smells out and makes throwing away diapers so easy!
Newborn Diapers
You will change so many diapers those first months it is not even funny. Pick up some newborn diapers now and add them to your registry because you will blow through these! Haha. We tried a bunch of diapers but our favorite for value and quality was Pampers Swaddlers. We are still using Pampers for Hilde (she is now in size 5!) and plan on using Pampers Swaddlers for this baby as well!
Those are the things that I would say are essential from my first go around. Of course there are so many other baby products to add to this list depending on the season and age. And so many things that are not essentials but just fun additions! There is a lot of trial and error in figuring out your parenting style and your baby – that’s okay! Enjoy the process and find what works best for you!
For all you other mamas out there, what were some of your newborn essentials?!
