Creating Art with Kids: Homeschool Summer Fun

Many people ask me if we still homeschool in the summer. The short answer is yes. The longer answer includes a lot of camps, adventures, pool days, hikes, projects, and other extracurricular learning experiences. We follow the traditional school calendar (after a year of trying and deciding the Jan – Dec year was not for us), so when summer comes, we too join the rest of the kids at camps and live outside as much as possible. When we have weeks of camp, we don’t try to do school on top of it. And when we go camping, we don’t bring our math along. But when we have slow summer days, we do start them with school after breakfast or we sneak school in during a rainy afternoon. When we continue to work on handwriting, reading, and math throughout the summer, our transition into the new year of school in August is much smoother!

One of the ways we summer school is signing up for something new and especially fun – like an art class! That is exactly what we did this year when I found a Summer Flag Workshop online! I had never heard of Tricia Robinson Art before but a well targeted Facebook ad caught my attention while I was trying to list something on marketplace. After a couple clicks, I knew I wanted to add it to our Summer School schedule and purchased all the needed supplies!

This was one of those things I knew we needed to do without little brother (2.5-year-olds don’t allow for a relaxing art environment) so we spread the classes out over three days, doing them after dinner while the summer sun is still high in the sky & my husband could put Thorin down for bed. Tricia , the art teacher, was an absolute gem! She loves the Lord so the whole workshop was filled with creating for the glory of God and growing confident artists. One thing Trisha always says is to “embrace the wonky!” and my girls just loved that! They still say it when they are crafting and something goes not as planned! It was a joy to do together and these flags we made will be great 4th of July decor in our home for years to come!

PS: It does look like the workshop isn’t always available but she does have some other ecourses on her website that you can purchase at anytime for an art class – those Confetti Angels are on my wish list!
