An Unlikely Closet Makeover

An Unlikely Closet Makeover - tuning a closet into a office space with Walls Need Love

Thank you Walls Need Love for sponsoring this post!

Living, sleeping, and working in the same place can get a little crowded at times. And not for just one of us – we BOTH work at home. When I transitioned into Oak + Oats full time, we moved our office to our master bedroom. We knew we needed as much space as possible for our office. Over the year, that room has become the home for three (yes 3!) businesses. Oak + Oats, Bruce’s job, and now Shop Oak + Oats.

While I dream of a day when we will have an actual office space for all this stuff, right now we have a master bedroom. It is easy to let it get over run with mess – packaging, products for sponsored posts, photography gear, projects, mail, and more. In those moments it is so easy for me to get discouraged and discontent. I’ve been making a spring cleaning goal to get our office as organized and efficient as possible. Working around piles and messes only increases my stress levels (and makes me jealous of people who have more space.)

Since we moved our office to our master bedroom, we got two closets built into our office. One of them is still dedicated to all our clothing (the guest bedroom closet is a joke 😉 ) but the other we have filled with our printers and anything else I want to hide when I try to clean. I knew there was a better way to organize this space and we turned it into a weekend project. Taking everything out of the closet and putting it in the middle of the room was a bit overwhelming but we both knew we wanted a dedicated Shop Oak + Oats space so we made it happen.

When everything was cleaned out, we wiped down the wall and got ready to put up this beautiful White Stone Removable Wallpaper I ordered from Walls Need Love. I think we so often feel like we have to wait to live the way we want when we own the perfect home or have everything on our Pinterest boards. Whether we vocalize this expectation or not, I think it keeps so much of us from being thankful for what we do have and keep us longing for what we don’t. There is joy and a ridiculous amount of peace found in gratefulness and contentment. Instead of planning for my dream future office (that may or may never be) I decided to make the space I have now feel more creative, connected, and organized. The wallpaper I picked out felt fun yet neutral. We spend so much time in this room and working on our planters for Oak + Oats that I wanted the space to not only be organized but beautiful.

We’ve used Walls Need Love so many times now that we are practically pros. Bruce doesn’t even need my help anymore and puts up the paper in less than 30 minutes. He is a champ! We love using Walls Need Love because it is such a fun way to bring fun & life to a room (even if you are a renter!) Removable wallpaper is pretty much the dream and makes such a difference. While I would love to keep this space magically open and care free, we also needed a place for all our PLA (what we use to make our planters) and packing materials. We put our two 3D printers in the middle and organized all our PLA in tubs below for easy access to find the color we need. Those tubs carry packaging material (bubble wrap, tissue paper, crinkle paper, etc) and we used the top shelf to hold our extra PLA, packing boxes, and other Shop Oak + Oats supplies. We make our planters to order but we also like to have some on hand for quick sales and other fun launches. That basket holds all the ready to go out planters keeping the room clean and clutter free! The curtains help close off the space when we need to and also help regulate the temperature where the printers are. To finish the project, I added some paper dolls of Bruce & I high-fiving. I bought these adorable dolls off Jordan Grace Owens for our wedding nearly five years ago! I love them so much and thought they would be the cake topper to this project. Shop Oat+ Oats has been a joint project from the beginning and one of my favorite things about this newest venture. Combining Bruce the engineer and Elizabeth the blogger into one dream!

No matter the space you have, you can make it fit your needs better and create a space you enjoy being in. Don’t buy into the lie that you will be “happier when…” Invest where you are, decorate where you are, create a space that encourages and inspires you now. Use code oakandoats25 from now through May 8 at Walls Need Love and get 25% off orders over $30 to give your walls some love.

Ok that wall paper really sets that space apart – it makes it look like a co-hesive part of your office and not just an afterthought of something throw into your closet.
